John Smith has been awarded the ‘Umpires and Scorers’ Outstanding Service to Cricket Award in Lancashire for his tireless work in cricket as the Chairman of the LCB Association of Cricket Officials and as a longstanding Palace Shield and Lancashire League umpire.
John has been a member of the Palace Shield panel of umpires for nearly 20 years and has regularly featured highly in the league’s own Nompere Trophy which rewards excellence as an umpire.
As Chairman of the LCB Association of Cricket Officials, a voluntary role, John has run numerous umpire training courses within Lancashire and enabled many new umpires to be recruited. The Association has 540 umpires and scorers as members who are supported by the committee, LCB and ECB.
For many years John has also umpired in the Lancashire League on Sundays, giving many hours weekly supporting the game he is passionate about and for the benefit of many who play the game.
John said: “I am delighted to receive the award. It is pleasing that the LCB hold umpires & scorers in such high regard.”
Managing Director for the Lancashire Cricket Board, Bobby Denning added: “John is a gentleman and long standing friend of the LCB. It is right for us to be able to recognise his contribution, often undertaken with minimal fuss and no doubt often under the radar.
“Not only has John given back to the game as an umpire, he has significantly contributed to others giving something to the game by enabling new umpires to be recruited and developed.
“I am confident in saying the agreements recently put in place between the Northern League and Palace Shield, have been easier to navigate through and reach sensible outcomes, with John around the table.
“A solid and knowledgeable cricket man.”
As the winner of the ‘Umpires and Scorers’ category in the LCB OSCAs, John has been put forward to be considered for the National OSCAs, which will take place at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Monday 9th October.
John sat down with Bobby Denning at the LCB Knock Out Cup Final at Emirates Old Trafford to chat about his award and experiences in umpiring.
