Morecambe CC enjoyed a winning start as their 2020 season finally began at the weekend.
They posted a comfortable eight-wicket win against Kendal at Shap Road on a day when the bowlers did the damage.
Morecambe won the toss, asked their opponents to bat first and then skittled them for 70 with Kieran Moffat taking 5-19 and Charlie Swarbrick 3-9.
Although Morecambe lost Jamie Heywood (17) and Alex Briggs (5) in reply, Swarbrick (24 not out) and Ryan Pearson (6 not out) guided them to victory on 72-2.
However, the reverse fixture went Kendal’s way as they won by 17 runs.
Oliver Killiner (65) and David Batty (56) helped Kendal to 182-5 before Morecambe’s reply ended with them on 165-9 despite Andrew Creech hitting 78.
Sunday brought a seven-wicket win for the thirds against Silverdale’s seconds.
Having restricted their opponents to 114-5, Morecambe replied with 119-3 as Steve Mawson hit 53 not out.
Lancaster, for their part, started the season with a two-wicket defeat in a low-scoring match against Netherfield.
Having been asked to bat first, Lancaster could only reach 84-8 as Lewis McGinley top-scored with 18.
However, they almost pulled off an unlikely win as Ben Simm (4-26) and Laurie Atkinson (2-19) helped to reduce Netherfield to 54-6 in reply.
Nevertheless, a combination of Isaac Medhurst (13 not out) and 20 wides saw Netherfield to victory on 86-8.
