At the Lancashire ACO (LACO) AGM which was held at Ribblesdale Wanderers CC last week our President John Smith was unanimously elected President of LACO as well. This wholly ceremonial role was previously held by Tommy Wilson who sadly passed away last year and prior to Tommy was held by ex Test umpire John Holder.

John was the sole recommendation for the post by the LACO Committee who referenced his long association with LACO as an umpire in both the Moore and Smalley Palace Shield and the Lancashire League, as well as his work both as a Trainer for LACO and as a former Chair of the organisation.

John organised much of the Training of new umpires for our competition over many years and more recently has been involved as an LACO Developer, observing umpires all over the county who apply for promotion on the Umpire Pathway.

His appointment has been welcomed on social media with one post referencing how highly he is regarded and respected in the north west cricket fraternity for his contribution and services.

must be a self starter and capable of working on their own without
continued supervision.

We will be running a club and panel umpire training workshop at Carnforth CC on Sunday 25 February 2024. Aimed at any new umpires who have completed the recently introduced ECB Umpires Course, it will provide additional information which Lancashire ACO believe all umpires need before umpiring in competitive league cricket. Existing club umpires may also attend as a refresher.

If you are interested in attending this course, which will require some pre course work, please email Rob Hales on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. If there is sufficient demand we will consider having an additional course at BAC Preston in March so please note in your response the venue you would prefer but note their is no guarantee that the Preston course will take place as it will depend upon demand.

The cost of the course will be £20.

Following the AGMs of the three competitions looking at setting up a pyramid, this is the current situation:

Carlisle have been elected to the NPL for season 2025. With the inclusion of Settle in 2024, this will take the NPL numbers to 14. Therefore, with the approved addition of up to 4 teams from the PS, this means there would be 18 places for a two division NPL for season 2025 so this can go ahead.

Ideally, we would like to have at least two more entries to bring the NPL total to 20 which is felt to give a better balance of teams in the two divisions.

With the approach of the new year, many clubs will now be looking at season 2024 and beyond so, if anyone is interested in joining our structure, this is the time to approach us. This may apply to clubs who feel they can compete in the NPL already or those who may feel more at home lower down the structure in the PS or WML. If anyone is interested, please contact one of the
competitions below:

In addition to the above statement which will go out on social media, we also would like to affirm our position on the following as stated at the AGM:
Although the voting did give a strong position in favour of the northern PS teams moving to the WML, there was also a strong message from those directly involved that they were against the
idea. As a result, we propose that any club from the WML who finishes in a relegation position in Div 1 / 1A, should return to the WML. However, should this happen to a club who originates from the PS / NPL and wishes to remain in the PS, we will respect those wishes. Furthermore, those teams below this level in our current structure and who reside in the northern area, will be allowed to remain in the PS.
