We have now developed an automated system to request a panel umpire to stand in a club game in Div2-4 or on Sundays etc.

Please ensure that you follow the new procedure by accessing the link to apply on the Palace Shield website rather than emailing the Umpire Appointments Secretary. The new process will be manged by Ansh Bansal, will save time and ensure that all parties have an audit trail of their request and any responses. It will be the clubs responsibility to contact the umpires via email once notified to finalise details.

Previously we had noted that BAC/EE Preston would be playing in Div 1A and the Sunday competition at BAC Warton and in Div 6 at Whittingham due to work by the Environment Agency.

This will now not start until June so all games to the end of May will revert to Riverside.  The first round cup tie with Morecambe will also be at Riverside on Sun 29th May.

Following the recent meetings with captains, a couple of issues have come to light with regard to lost time so this note should help clarify this.

First, we have reduced the game in Division 5 and 6 to 40 overs but not stipulated a change to the end time for the game.  This was an oversight and, as the purpose of the rule change was to enable games to finish earlier, we can confirm that the end time for these games should be 7pm.  Therefore, timings such as the last hour need adjusting for these games to 6pm.

Secondly, although the calculation for overs is set out in the rules, it still needs a bit of clarification.  To enable the maximum amount of playing time, the panel umpires have been operating the following process over recent years.  If the interval is in the first innings, the overs are recalculated using the time off the pitch.  In the second innings, the overs are recalculated on the basis of the time left for play after the resumption.  So, if a game has progressed well and a relatively short period of time is lost, fewer overs than expected will be lost.  In particular, this can benefit teams who bowl their overs more quickly.

The details for both these clarifications are below:

1st innings interruption

Overs are lost according to the following table (per rule19)

8 minutes - 2 overs

15 minutes 4 overs

with the side batting second having a maximum of half the revised number of overs.

Example: an interruption in the fist innings of 30 minutes would result in a 40 over game being reduced to 36 overs per side

2nd innings interruption

Overs available are calculated based on the finishing time of 7.30pm (7pm for Div 5&6) using the following table in 19b:

4 minutes - 1 over

8 minutes - 2 overs

15 minutes - 4 overs

30 minutes - 8 overs

60 minutes 16 overs.

Example: an interruption in the 2nd innings occurs after 10 overs and play resumes at 6pm

In the 45 overs game, there is 1 hour 30 left which is 24 overs so the total is 34 overs.  In Division 5 and 6, there is 1 hour left for play which is 16 overs to 26 overs in total

In all divisions, the umpires / scorers / captains can then use the DLS app as demonstrated to calculate the runs required.

A good friend of mine, Ian Caunce, who is the groundsman at Mawdesley CC and a fellow member of Lancs Over 60’s cricket is looking to organise fixtures for a Lancs over 70’s team. His intention is to arrange a few friendlies this season and then to enter the national competition in 2023.

Anyone over the age of 68, who is interested in playing should contact Ian. They will be eligible to play as a 69 year old next season in the official competition.

Can you help in informing all clubs and members of this opportunity? League and club websites, league twitter accounts and any other means available.

If you are able to help Ian’s contact details are below. He is happy for these to be included in any correspondence.

Hopefully you can help. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my games with the Over 60’s, hopefully others in the area can get the same pleasure out of the great game.
